5 Valuable Internet Security Tips

Nowadays, more and more people rely heavily on technology for various reasons. While some use their computers solely for entertainment, others are dependent on the Internet for business purposes and making a living. Whatever the reasons, one should always be aware that cyber security is not a topic to be taken lightly, and good measures have to be taken to avoid malware attacks. With the rapid development of means of communication over the past few decades, we have also seen some negative sides of the technological advancement that need to be taken into consideration. As computer science makes such a progress into the future, the number of possible exploits and various types of malware increases. As people entrust their machines with storing sensitive data like credit card information or online shopping credentials, the need for better Internet security has become more profound. But despite all possible threats that are out there, one can always make a few steps to achieve better and secure usage of the Internet.

Careful Browsing

It is good to always remember to pay attention when browsing, as most of the possible attacks occur there. One should be careful not to follow suspicious links or click on advertising pop ups.  Staying away from untrustworthy websites can prevent a number of problems and security risks. It is a good measure to avoid clicking on random email attachments or links as a lot of viruses and Trojan horses are distributed through emails. Browsing that involves sharing of sensitive information over the Internet like online banking or shopping should be done solely on a personal device on a trusted network. A lot of attackers take advantage of unsecured networks and devices to steal valuable information.   People should also try to not share a lot of personal facts about themselves on social media such as birth dates, working places and closest contacts, since all of these can be used later in gaining access to more valuable data.

Strong Passwords

Never underestimate the need for a good password when creating an account somewhere. Passwords work best when they are lengthy, with randomly selected characters that can’t be guessed easily. Avoid using plain words for your passwords as an attacker can hack them with so called “dictionary attacks” – it is best if some special symbols and random characters are used. Of course, one should never use the same password twice or share the knowledge of the key word openly with others.

Avoid Physical Access to the Device by Others

Never leave your computer, tablet or laptop unattended no matter for how short. Try to always lock your screen with a good password to prevent possible exploitation of your private information.  Also, it can be a nice habit to check everything that is connected to your computer, be it USB flash drive or external hard drives, as many attacks are distributed through these channels. Additionally, the encryption of the hard drive(s) of a computer could turn out to be an effective measure against intruders of personal data. It is worthy spending the time to put it as an additional obstacle between a possible attacker and the computer.

Regular Back Up

Despite taking serious security measures, one can always be surprised by a worm or another form of malware that can destroy valuable data. Therefore, it is good practice to regularly back up all of the files that are of some value to avoid losing them when a security breach happens. External hard drives or cloud services can be turned into valuable ways to secure the user’s most important files from damaging or deletion.

Good Anti-Malware Software

One of the most basic things that can be done for better security is to install a trustworthy antivirus program. Of course, there is no single program that can protect against every single piece of malware there is, but it’s still a good beginning. Also, the user should not forget to do regular updates on the antivirus, as new kinds of attacks are being invented quite often, making it very important to ensure that the system is up to date with its protection. Setting up a firewall is another step one can take in order to improve the state of their security. The firewall typically acts as a barrier between the trusted home network and the rest of the Internet.
